Senior Pages: Privilege or Problem?

Throughout the fall trimester, you would be hard-pressed to find a student who has not heard an announcement regarding the submission of senior pages. If you’re anything like this year’s seniors, you might have wondered: why are senior pages due so early?

“With college applications being such a stressful and busy season,” said senior Ethan Linn, “I feel like maybe we should get a little longer.”

Upper School Arts teacher and Yearbook advisor Ms. K understands the request.

“I think students don’t complete their pages because at the beginning of the year they are preoccupied with coming back to school and getting acclimated to their courses,” she said. “Having something due at the end of October sets in their minds ‘I don’t have to look at it right now.’”

However, there is a genuine reason concerning the early due date every year. “We have publication deadlines, so the faster we get our pages turned in, the faster we get our book out on time,” said Ms. K.

Just slap some photos on your page, and Bob’s your uncle. It sounds simple, right? Nevertheless, this seemingly uncomplicated task proves very difficult for some students.

There are certain restrictions as to what content is allowed on senior pages, but “[seniors] like to try and be a little sneaky,” said junior Emma Luchsinger, yearbook Editor-in-Chief. They often attempt to sneak inappropriate pictures with “alcohol, weapons, drugs, or inappropriate clothing” in them onto their pages, trying to fool yearbook staff as best as they can.

Luchsinger reflected on these failed attempts, recalling how students have “hidden things behind photos, blurred them, or made them look like something else,” and linked inappropriate photos to a QR code cleverly captioned with “Teachers don’t scan.”

While these tactics might seem brilliant in the moment, may all future seniors be warned: Nothing gets past the eagle eyes of the yearbook team. Nothing.
