Softball Battles in Their New League

Eliora Adu ’24

St. Andrew’s Softball has had a riveting year, and while not championship winners, they emerged more so as survivors.

This season, they played against some of the best teams in Maryland and Virginia. Their competitors included Potomac School, ranked #6 in Virginia; McClean, #96 in Maryland; and Georgetown Visitation, the #1 Softball Team in Washington D.C.

The softball team still managed to come out above the bottom of the league, and along with their brand new uniforms, this is a victory in their books. They are also welcoming new additions, such as freshman Maddie Ready, a new left fielder who will be moving to Varsity center field at the beginning of her sophomore year. Maddie has had some amazing saves and falls, and she is decidedly more dedicated to catching the ball than to her own safety.

It is imperative that we recognize our pitcher, senior Leah Facciobene, who was our only pitcher for every game of the season. For anyone who does not understand, that is a feat in and of itself, especially on a week when you play three games back-to-back.

We also had outstanding plays from our graduating center fielder, senior Juliette Naddelmann, who rushed for every ball sent to the outfield and made some amazing outs.

We even witnessed Leah Facciobene “eliminate” Eliora Adu for senior assassin at the end of their Madeira game, a well-deserved win.

While the season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs versus Potomac, the team keeps their hopes high for next year.

Now, with five seniors graduating (Pamela Kim, Cecilia Deeny-Locraft, Eliora Adu, Leah Facciobene, and Juliette Naddelman), the team is looking for more talent. Anyone is welcome to showcase their skills and join the team. With the leadership baton now passing to first baseman, junior Kayla Bhatia, third baseman, junior Samina Bhatia, shortstop, junior Gwen Sampson, and head coach Ashley Splaine, we are bound for another amazing season at St. Andrew’s. Go Lions!
