On November 6th, 2024, St. Andrew’s science teacher Ms. Estrada gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Lucas Estrada. Weighing just 7lbs and 10oz at birth, he matured remarkably quickly, and I was lucky enough to sit down with the young Estrada earlier this month to ask him some questions about what it’s like to be a baby. What follows is a transcript of that conversation.

Hello Lucas, thank you for taking this time to meet with me.

Of course. Thank you for having me.

So, how are you finding life on Earth?

Oh, you know how it is. Just taking it all in, one day at a time [laughs]. But in all seriousness, it’s been amazing. Like the great Walt Whitman once said, “What good amid these, O me, O life? Answer: That you are here—that life exists and identity, that the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.”  I’m just getting ready to contribute my verse.

Quoting Walt Whitman at just a month old? How did you even manage to read that?

Oh, I can’t read. I met Walt in the ether between life and death where I was chilling before I was born. He and I hung out a lot. Played a lot of backgammon.

Oh, of course. Speaking of pastimes… What do you do all day? What’s a day like in Lucas Estrada’s life?

It’s just… bliss. Pure bliss. I have a pretty solid routine: wake up, poop, go back to sleep, wake up a few hours later, poop, and then I’m down for the night. Though, it has been getting a little old…

What would you rather be doing?

You know, I saw an episode of Antiques Roadshow on PBS the other day. I feel like that’s my calling – appraising antiques. Actually, another episode is on soon, I have to run. Thank you for having me!

Well, thank you for your time. It’s been very enlightening.
