As a senior, for my last hoorah for tennis I was disappointed to learn that we would only have our tennis courts for two weeks. But then, due to an unseasonably cold March with lots of rain, our days of playing on our own courts were diminished to just two measly days.
Moving to the Hoover courts for the first time, our new home for the season, I was less than thrilled. However, after a couple of practices, I began to see the new courts as home. The lack of wind protectors and position of the sun give the match a somewhat level playing field against better competition. Furthermore, the courts are newly installed, thus they are in perfect condition. Also, there are six courts opposed to four, which makes practicing easier.
There is also much more space for fans to come and watch the game. This season there has been more support from the fans. Due to the openness of the Hoover courts, more fans are able to watch from all over, a nice contrast to the bleachers that other sports teams have.
The courts also help in terms of team spirit. During a match, every player, from 1 singles to 3 doubles, is lined up along the courts. This makes it easy to support your teammates because they are playing right next to you.
Although I miss the feel of the old courts, walking behind to get to the upper courts, and the memories of the past three years, the Hoover courts aren’t that bad. I will look back and remember playing at Hoover not as a regretful experience, but as one that helped the tennis program grow and connect throughout an enjoyable season.
