It’s about time… It’s about time that a great advocate of freedom has finally been formally recognized on a large scale within today’s society. If you haven’t guessed already, I’m talking about the addition of Harriet Tubman to the Mount Rushmore of notable faces on the twenty-dollar bill. It’s important for our generation and those after us to know the legacy of those who have not held the office of President but who risked their lives for the good of others and the promise of liberation.

Not only is it a good step with the introduction of an African-American onto the front of the bill, it just so happens that Harriet Tubman was a woman as well. This shows how our society has shifted from being completely male dominated to one that now gives more gratitude to women and their accomplishments. I think the addition of Tubman to the twenty-dollar bill is more significant than just a change in ethnicity from the long tenure of Andrew Jackson – it reflects the direction in which our society is progressing. With the addition of Tubman we remember the old wounds of those men and women who, at a point in time, had been enslaved. Additionally, we are witnessing America making moves to face its violent history of racial and gender discrimination.
