Design thinking is one of the pillars of the St. Andrew’s philosophy. As the infrastructure of St. Andrew’s improves with the Student Center and the D! Lab, so does the emphasis on design thinking. In the classroom, the creative projects that can be used as a substitute for a final exam, such as the 10th grade podcast project, allows students to shape their school experience. To expand design thinking in the classroom, I would propose more choice in the curriculum. If teachers were to outline what topics the class needed to cover and allowed students to find ways to reach that goal, students would sharpen their ability to solve complex problems and become better design thinkers. For students aiming to become better design thinkers using current infrastructure, the D! Lab allows students to solve problems they may encounter independently. As a student and intern of the D! Lab, I believe that, as the lab expands, including more classes and more interns, it will be the place where design thinking will prosper most at St. Andrew’s.
