For the Boy’s Varsity Soccer Team, the goal is to accomplish something that remains an almost nonexistent dream. They want to win the MAC title. Since their move from the PVAC to the MAC in 1998, the Lions hope to capture their first MAC title since 2003. But with the season that they have had so far, the Lions are great contenders to win it all. With a strong backline, a solid midfield, and highly capable strikers, St. Andrew’s has what it takes to go all the way.
The players on the team have all stepped up when their team needs them. The defense, which consists of Husam Shabazz, James McLeish, Ian Decker, and Baraka Kiingi, has been lights-out against opponents, while Alex Smith has done a great job as goalie with 7 shutouts. Liam Howe, Keenan Shepard, and Connor Orr have played superbly at midfield, with Orr leading the team with five assists. The strikers, Luke Armbruster, Gabe Dewey, and Michael McDonnell-Diaz, have showcased great performances, with Dewey and McDonnell-Diaz leading the team in goals, with seven and six respectively. The Lions, led by Coach Alex Haight, are three playoff games away from capturing the MAC title.
With a record of 6-2-4, the team finished third in the MAC, coming only behind Potomac and Flint Hill. With key wins over rivals like Sidwell and Maret, the Lions have won games when they mattered most. Although history may be against them, the current team has loads of talent. St. Andrew’s hadn’t beaten Sidwell since 2003, but this year, the Lions came up on top against the Quakers twice. The road will be tough, but the Lions have what it takes to win the MAC title.
